GUANTANAMO DETAINEE ABU ZUBAYDAH AND THE U.S. TORTURE PROGRAM: STILL PAYING A BRUTAL PRICE FOR EMBARRASSING THE GOVERNMENT? Zubaydah’s lawyer, Mark Denbeaux details the nightmare his client has lived for almost twenty years as the detainee around which President Bush authorized the creation of the U.S. government’s torture program. After torturing Zubaydah extensively, the government revealed that he was not the high-value al Qaeda terrorist and close bin Laden associate Bush publicly said he was; in fact, he wasn’t al Qaeda at all. Nonetheless, Zubaydah is still being held at Guantanamo with no end in sight to his incarceration.
